Bromley

Bromley LEA: Civic Centre, Stockwell Close, Bromley BR1 3UH     Tel:  020 8464 3333

Profile:  Bromley is London’s largest borough by area and has a population of about 300,000.  It incorporates Biggin Hill, Chislehurst, Orpington, Beckenham, and Penge.  It is a suburban borough with the southern half remaining mostly open countryside.  It is one of London’s most affluent boroughs although it still contains areas of social deprivation.  As a whole, the borough has one of London’s lowest unemployment rates.  Beckenham has many business and finance concerns, while Orpington is a retailing hub, and Bromley centre itself combines both.  There is only one LEA-run school in the borough with the rest being foundation, voluntary-aided, or independent schools.  There are a large number of independent schools.

Policy:  Parents should contact the Bromley LEA for details of admission to state schools.  Newstead Wood (Girls) and St Olave’s (Boys) are selective grammar schools and allocate places based on test results — a supplementary application form is required.  Bishop Justus CofE also requires a supplementary application form and takes into account faith criteria.  Other schools allocate places first to siblings then on the basis of proximity of home to the school.  Open days are in September/October.
